According to the site at:

Q1:
How do I get a duplicate certificate of title?

A1:
Application is made in person at any county title office. There is a $6.00 fee. Please take your picture ID, registration or any other documents that verify the vehicle identification number.

If you ever had a title for the bike, simply go to the DMV and order a duplicate. If you have never had the title, check with the DMV to see if they will grant you a title with just a Bill of Sale--- some states will do this with older cars and bikes, and some won't. If they will accept a Bill of Sale, you can't sell it to yourself but you can have a friend or family member write you one. Include the VIN, set an arbitratry price, and get it notarized so they will accept it.

If your state won't take a Bill of Sale, there are title services that will act as the go-between... basically you "sell" the bike to them, they take your bill of sale to their state's DMV and get a title, then "sell" it back to you. It sounds shady, I know, but it works; your bike never really changes hands, you're just paying them a fee (usually around $50-75) for them going to the DMV and titling it for you. I've used Titles Unlimited several times, and it's always been smooth and easy!

I think you can get an abandoned vehicle title. I have an old honda CB360 in my shed.

Go to the DMV and they can make a new one... at least that's how it works in NJ. I'm not sure what the cost is.

It's called a salvage title, and you get one at DMV. It's not expensive but it does take awhile.
