Soccer (football) isn't popular in the US because it's boring. There are better athletes and more money in other sports. We don't grow up saying, "If I could only be David Beckham and play in the World Cup." We say, "If I could only throw the winning touchdown pass in the Super Bowl." Soccer players are glorified cross country runners with coordination. On top of all that, we suck miserably at the sport because our best athletes go elsewhere.

Yes, football is the most watched/followed/played sport in the world. The fact that it is not as popular in the US does not mean that nobody cares for it.
The World Cup is a real World event, unlike the World Series (where only US and Canadian baseball teams participate) or World Championship (American Football or Basketball).
Why is not popular in the US? Mainly due to media. Football (or soccer for the US) is not TV friendly - continuous 45 min of play thus no time for advertisement. Also, it does not fit with the American way of watching sports: low scoring games (sometimes - as 1 goal equals 1 point), substitution - there's no re-entry, no time to get up and wander around the concesion stands - or else you miss the game.
The world is bigger than the US.
Hope this answers your question.

Nobody in the US really cares about football, they don't wach it and they find it boring. Personally, i find american football and nascar boring, because I don't understand them, and it's the same with americans. Football will never become popular, unless you broadcast it more openly(seriously, where I come from, there are two broadcasting channels and during the world cup, there is nothing else to watch, but the news)

Yes, millions of people care for the World Cup. In the US, it's becoming more and more poular as time passes.

Georgi, soccer isn't hard to understand, but it is a much slower, much more deliberate, and lower scoring sport than other ones we have. NASCAR isn't hard to understand either; get in your car and drive 500 miles without crashing, and get there faster than the other guys.

American football is a much more tactical and much more intense sport than soccer, which is why Americans like it.
