Try ear candles. You can get these at a health store. Make sure to use a container like an aluminum pie tin, sold at grocery stores, the disposable ones. Just cut out a hole big enough for the candle to fit through as it burns. Also you need another person for lighting the candle. You won't believe how good it feels to get your ears vacuumed out,, and what comes out, yuck. My sister in law gave me these candles years back and my whole family lines up for it with anticipation once or twice a year. We probably don't do it often enough, though. It feels great!! And won't damage your ears at all!! You do need two people for this though!

Generally, when using the Q-tip, when you meet resistance, you should stop. *grin* Seriously avoid cotton swabs, because every time you use one, you potentially introduce bacteria and fungi into your ear canal (unless you happen to have access to sterile swabs, which most of us don't). You can also inadvertently push ear wax further up into the ear canal, again encouraging bacteria to grow there rather than being flushed out by the flow of ear wax (or cerumen, if you must use the technical term for it) For real cleaning, there are a number of products on the market, usually saline solutions with some sort of light organic solvent that you squirt in gently with a bulb syringe, hold in with your head tilted for a moment, then drain out and repeat several times. Never, ever, ever dig in your ears with anything sharp or hard, and don't go any deeper than about an inch; you always risk damaging your eardrums if you're poking around too far or too vigorously in your ears.
Over the counter wax softening drops, such as Audiologist's Choice® or Debrox®, can be used to help remove excess ear wax. If you prefer a more do-it-yourself approach, a solution of half white vinegar and half rubbing alcohol will serve to dry out the ear canal and change the pH, making it much less hospitable to microorganisms. I also have heard of people using a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution, which will help kill bacteria but won't do as much to remove excess wax, since it's 99.9% water and has no other solvents in it to break up accumulation. Talk to your doctor about your options as well; he may have other ideas you can use.

Peroxide! Tap a capful of peroxide, tilt your head to the side and pour it in - you'll hear fizzing (like pop-rocks) - don't worry! Keep it in until it stops fizzing (approx. 30-60 seconds), then take a q-tip & absorb the rest of the peroxide. Don't be freaked out because at 1st your ear will feel strange & sound will be muffled but that's just because the excess perox. needs to dry out - it will only take a few seconds. Then, repeat on other ear! My mother did this all the time when I was a kid - never any problems & it cleans out your ears amazingly well. Hope this helps.

Peroxide is good. And there are products over the counter especially for that. Follow the instructions so you don't damage your ear drums.

Get an ear candle. $h!t brings out the gnarliness, yo. Make sure to cut a paper plate and put it on the side of your face as you burn the ear candle so the wax doesn't drip down on your face.
You'll be amazed at what comes out.
