I've been studying the tarot for about 5 years now, and I'm thinking of starting do readings. So far I've only done them for people I know. What is a good way to get a start at doing readings on a more professional level. Also for all the people who are doing tarot already, what kind of ups and downs have you experienced since you've been reading the cards.

I have been reading for 19 years now. I personally don't do it professionally, although I have done some paid readings. I find the Tarot to be a great tool. There are many ups and downs...ups getting to assist folks with issues they have, empathic connection to others around you and the energy shared in the process. A spiritual "high" always comes to me after a praticularry good reading. The ups list goes on.....as far as downs, you have to deal with the likes of some who have posted here...the religious zealots that will denounce you for being evil.satanic, yada yada.... this is actually important from a business standpoint.....choose your location wisely.....
The same "high" can also be a crashing low when the reading is a negative one. I once did a reading for a woman who I later found out was otherkin..and that messed me up as I was not prepared for the onsluaght of energy and repressed emotion that flowed through the cards to me....(strange, that one...I can usually spot them a mile away)
BEing witness to others repressed emotion can be rather painful....If you have been doing reading for your friends, you are likely to understand, but with strangers, it is a whole new ballgame...with your friends, you know alot about them anyway..and are at least familiar with their base personality. The Tarot can penetrate the threshold to the inner psych of people and unleash things better left buried.....hence why I tend to NOT read for strangers anymore...few bad experiences.

If you choose to continue...good luck....

After 5 years you have to know how Tarot is special, won't tellwhatpeople want to know most like "will he mary me" or "will I pass the exam" etc....Other thing is,it won't tell you things that are going to happen in a far future unless you really specify the question by asking about exact time and place and of course, that could be difficult-you don't know what will be in a far future.Tarot is not made to tell you wha't gonna be but how and why and how you can change it,work it out, what to do to get something etc.Lots of people are looking for a specific answer,so when you read the cards for someone you don't know, you should work your way to good answer by knowing a little bit about the person.I always ask ifthe question is about his private life or if it's about work etc...and I ask where is the problem, what's going on-to get a really good answer you have to give a very clear question.Example.Someone wants to know the situation with her or his boyfriend. It's good to know:if that person really has somebody, why is he asking(is there any problem in relationship or not),if he wants to know what his or her partner will be like in a future, how his or her partner will act...More you know more you can tell.If you have a general question, you get a general answer. So,be as much specific as you can be.
Also set a time range,I mean say this is what's gonna be in following 2 months or half year(I wouldn't go further).Or count the time(doesn't work too much-my personal experience)by counting card's numbers, they mean weeks or months.
Do readings for as many people as you can, practice. After a while, ask the people you read the cards for what happened in their lives, remember what your cards told them and you will see what did your cards "knew"or where were the mistakes.Tarot cards are always right,it's your interpretation and explanation that could be wrong(happened to me so many times..I asked somebody what happened and I was like Oh my god it was in the cards i just explained it a wrong way).remember each card has many different meanings and it's up to you to explain all of them. That's why Tarot is missunderstood by many people, mostly by those who want to know too simple things like "will I have money" or "will I get that job".By the way these were the wrong questions, you already know after 5 years,"What should I do to get the money" that's right question.
Sorry to make this answer too long but I could write a novel here and it still wouldn't be enough.
I am just curious. What kind of Tarot cards do you use?
Good luck I am happy there are still people you worship Tarot cards!!!!!

The ups of tarot reading is good when you see good things are going to happen, but bad because you have connections with the spirit world, remember not all spirits are good ones.

Tarot is an intuitive art based primarily upon the arts of guessing well, reading others well, and being able to entertain others successfully. It is definitely not a good career path for the shy and/or socially inept.

I used to read the tarot, thing is it has an energy attraction-sometimes negative things happen due to the readings. I stopped when I read death and sickness to a dear friend, and he later got tested HIV positive. If you are going to do readings, remember you are not supposed to set an exact price, people have to give you what they feel you have provided. It's bad luck to charge.

I rank Tarot right up there alongside numerology, seances, scientology, creationism, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, voodo and other assorted weirdness. It's all a monumental waste of time and money.

I've only ever done it alone, for myself.
I've never had any "downs" when it came to tarot, only positive.

Up side: more money and meeting interesting people
Downside: opening yourself up to satanic influence by communing with the spirit world which the bible specifically condemns.
