I think you are trying to get at that in the song "If I were a rich man." He pretty much says how he would spend the money on showing off and buying things to relax and make his life easier and fun, thus he would not be rich very long.
But I don't think you can look at the song that way, it's not like he is telling his accountant what he wants to do with his money. He is day dreaming. He is clearly a devoted husband and father so if he had more money he wouldn't blow it all on "bling-bling". But in his daydream he has so much money he can blow a lot of it on stupid things like a staircase that has no purpose.

No Way!! look what happened to Humpty Dumpty, He was just sitting on a wall and got killed by falling off.
Jumping around on peoples roofs playing a Fiddle has got to be 100 times more dangerous and very very expensive. Especially if he is playing a Stradivarius. You can bet when he slips that fiddle goes flying and he is clawing like heck for his life. All his money would have went on emergency room fees from busting his asp when he fell off of them..

Yes, because his wife would have had a lot to say about what to do or not to do with the money... and she had some good fiscal and common sense.
Even though he kept saying he was the head of the household and made all the decisions, she really had equal say in things and great influence during a time when that was not popular.
