It has a set of libraries to convert the database data into valid objects in the language of your choice. Check out Hibernate for Java or nHibernate for .NET, both are open source.

Hibernate works by saving an image of the memory to the hard drive before shutting down. When coming out of hibernation, Windows restores the image to memory so that you are back where you left off.
