because those people are ignorant! and obviously full of hate!
heres an example of how stupid Christians are and how anyone can take them seriously is beyond me!
In the 1920's my grandmother attended catholic elementary. she was born left handed so therefore it was natural for her to write with her left hand. well back then Catholics thought it was evil and the work of the devil if you were born left handed because you were "different", and a minority. My grandmother was slapped on her left hand with a ruler by the nuns, sometimes till she bled, everyday until she was trained to use her right hand! We can look back on that today and think how ignorant ridiculous right? well one day well look back and say i cant believe gays were treated unequal! Its NOT A F*CKIN CHOICE!!!! its how you are born! just like you a born left handed!

Well, understand something....homosexuality was against the law at one time as well.
This is a complex issue, but here are my observations:
1) Gay marriage is not a cause for some abridged civil right. It is insulting to insinuate that it is to many African-Americans who struggled for civil acceptance for something they had no control over - the color of their skin. Being Gay is a choice, skin color is not.
2) Sure, people, immediately rebut the argument for Gay marriage with the "hey-I'll-marry-my-dog" routine. That's simplistic and extreme. It's more complicated than that. Would we let a brother and sister marry? How about a mother and son? Many perceive that if we don't draw the line somewhere, eventually, there will be no line. Our civil laws don't allow for marriage for convenience to get citizenship, nor should it to allow for some commercial benefit such as insurance coverage.
3) There is a difference between tolerance and acceptance. We should tolerate civil unions, but not accept gay marriage. Traditional marriage has principally been the domain of faith-based religion. Will we write laws that promote and accept gay marriage at the expense of free religion? Will we jail, fine or punish clergy and parishioners that believe otherwise?
4) Some might make the argument that being Gay is not a choice, but that it is genetic. Well, if that's true and some test is devised to determine whether an in utero child will be gay, I would say the gay community will become pro-life in the blink of an eye overnight!
5) Truthfully, most of the hang-up is over the issue of sex, not civil unions or gay marriage. Most heterosexuals know that biologically speaking, homosexuality is bad for the survival of the species. But at the end of the day, who really cares who decides to spend time or commit to a relationship with someone that meets their own needs? I would daresay, nobody. The real issue is that the agenda is to impose acceptance on the greater society without their consent. That creates resentment.
Again, let's all be respectfully tolerant of each other, but not impose a minority view on the rest of society.

For the same reason that, whenever pedophilia by a priest is brought up, someone will say "If only they could marry this would never have happened."
The appetite for a child is not the same as that for a woman, nor that for a man, nor that for an animal. There is a tendency to lump anything other than hetersexuality together - perhaps it is perceived as normal.
Every marriage exists in three forms within the U.S. The first is the civil relationship, the binding legal and ethical contract to which both spouses are bound, and that terminates upon civil divorce or death of either spouse.
The second is the relationship between two spouses. No law can define this, it is emotional, spiritual, physical, mental, all of those most internal qualities.
The third is the religious marriage, which actually not all marriages have (J.O.P., for instance). In the religious marriage, there is more than a contract - Catholic marriage unites the spouses into one and mandates that they help each other get to Heaven.
(Please no snide comments of "if you only followed a real religion, you'd know the way!")
For that reason, I think we'll see gay marriage legalized as a civil institution in this country within the next 50 years. I'm not necessarily fond of it, but ours is a democracy and majority rules.

HandyThinker: I feel the urge to respond to your comments.
1) "Gay marriage is not a cause for some abridged civil right. It is insulting to insinuate that it is to many African-Americans who struggled for civil acceptance for something they had no control over - the color of their skin. Being Gay is a choice, skin color is not."
I, for one, intend no insult. However FYI, "acting gay" like wearing or not wearing a condom, is a choice. Being gay is NOT. I am Left Handed (not that there's anything wrong with that) I can put a pen in my right hand, and put pen to paper, but that's not how I'm put together, and it would be a disadvantage to the reader.
2) & 3) the way the Vermont Law was written, a civil union can in fact be between any 2 adults, be they both male, both female, mother and son, whatever. there is no implication of a sexual relationship between the 2 halves.
Also, Marriage is BOTH a religious and state "insititution" No one can make a minister marry a couple he doesn't want to, if that is against his faith (besides, he'd spit in the eucharist). However, because the state is bound to not have a single state religion, take a walk down the street to a different church, and ta-da, he's Parson Brown. He'll say "are you married, we'll say no man, but you can do the job when you're in town!" MY church says I can get married to a guy, yours does not. Who's right? It is not for the state to decide. It is for the state to grant me the same right anyone else would have. What my church calls it is between me and my church.
4) "Some might make the argument that being Gay is not a choice, but that it is genetic. Well, if that's true and some test is devised to determine whether an in utero child will be gay, I would say the gay community will become pro-life in the blink of an eye overnight!"
I'll be honest, I'm not sure I have a position on abortion (certain to offend both sides, but then, I understand both sides) but the latest studies show a strong link between homosexuality and in utero hormone events. in the case of right handed(!) males the more older brothers he has(thus, the more male foetuses that came before him, inside a female body), the greater the chance he's gay(?) my best bud just came out, he's a rightie, and he has 4 older brothers.
this does not hold true for lefties(?) we are just as likely as anyone to be straight or gay. weird.
also, there's always the finger test. measure your index finger next to your ring finger. a longer ring finger is VERY common in gay men(like me) and women, the reverse is common for straight folks.

Once again the foolish make statements that are completely out of sinc. Allow me to educate again (this means you Muggles)
First off, those who wish Polygamy tend to be Mormons and other CHRISTIAN!! denominations, so go b*tch at them not gays.
Now Muggles, once again you need education so listen up:
1. The Romans did in fact profer Gay Marriage, sorry sweets but it was common among the pagans.
2. The Greeks also allowed, in fact the most feared army of it's time the Spartans demanded homosexuality be praticed among their men, the thought being you would fight that much harder to protect your lover.
3. Marriage was never, I repeat never a creation of God. Please no comments about what the King James Version of the Bible sayys, it's a VERSION not the real deal, also it's been translated so often you'd be hard pressed argue its accuracy.
4. Marriage is a social construct, ironically brought about through property rights, specifically a daughter for a piece of land (sounds romantic no?)
So please people, research, learn and listen, then make valid arguements. Is that the point here.

Its a matter of laws. Marriage is a religious institution and it offends those of religious conviction. Just because its America does not allow you to marry whomever. I cannot marry two men because of the American laws. Most people are against gay marriage because of the issues of social security, spousal benefits and insurance policies. For instance SS was invented for spouses to support their families should the other parent pass away. Many don't believe a gay couple should receive SS benefits if this happens to them because they cannot produce offspring which would be potential tax-paying people. If gay people want to be together forever then let them do so. But the laws and benefit that were originally created will have to be scrutinized to see if they should be allowed to receive them

Notice that mostly everyone against gay marriage is Christian or Catholic or something like that. In the Bible, homosexuality is bad.
They back up their no gay marriage stuff with "that's not what god intended".
Well for your information, there is such thing as SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!
When you decide something like marriage [or any other legal issue for that matter], you shouldn't even mention god, religion, or the bible.
It seems as if they want a religion based government.
If indeed that happens, then I really think America will finally reach its long awaited downfall.
But anyways.
That reminds me of what Bush said, "God intended me to be president." Seriously, WTF!!!
Yeah...
I don't know what else to say.
I had something really good too.
Damnit.

Because for all of time until right now marriage has always been between a man and a woman even thru the roman empire and sodom and gammorah they never sought to redefine marriage and you wish to do that now well if you water it down it cease to be marriage and will decay. I am all for homoseuxals having a union ceremony and call it a bonding call it a union but Marriage should always stand as a union between a male and a female. It has never been any other way.

It's really ignorance. People don't want to deal with the idea of homosexuality, so they try to change the subject; to make the issue even more complicated.
