It does not matter the size of a piece of paper - you can use a bed-sheet or a tarp or an A4 or letter sized piece of paper. Regardless, it cannot be folded in *half* more than eight times.

it can, and has been done. the pomona historical society hosts a webpage that explains some of it. for the full explanation, they want your money, but it's less than $10. Britney Galivan, the math student that solved it - thus making history - is pictured at that site, posing with the proof.

I've never actually tried it; but I did read something years ago which said that no matter how big the piece of paper is, it would not fold more than seven times cos the fold ends up too bulky...

If you try it, you will see the answer. Regardless of the size or thickness of the paper, the folds make the paper more bulky each time. By the time you get to the eigth fold, it is too bulky to do anything with.

This is wrong. The 'world record' for folding paper in half is 12 times. The record was set by Britney Gallivan while she was a junior in high school.

She wrote a booklet on the principles behind it. Her method was also featured in an episode of Numb3rs.

Edit: Gee, someantha beat me to it.
