Bill Gates is still the world's richest man for the eleventh consecutive year with an estimated $US46.5 billion. The gap for the number 1 position is quickly closing though, with investor Warren Buffett coming a close second at $US42 billion.
According to the Forbes business magazine there are now 691 billionaires in the world, which is 104 more than last year when there where just 587 billionaires.
People from all industries and from every region of the world are making their presence know on the rich list in 2005. New entrants have come from Poland, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Iceland. The weak American dollars has helped many non-US rich increase their fortunes simply by watching the US dollar take a dive in value.
Australia also now has a total of 6 billionaires in the list due to favorable dollar exchanges and the ambitious rich. The media mogul Kerry Packer is Australia's richest man, but the world's 94th richest man at $US5 billion. Ex-pat Aussie media mogul Rupert Murdoch is benefiting from his US citizenship and passion to succeed as he continues to move up the ranks of the world's richest, in position 49 with $US7.8 billion.
The biggest gainer was easily India's Lakshmi Mittal with an amazing increase of $US18.8 billion in 12 months. Another 18 months at that rate and he'll be pushing Bill Gates and Warren Buffett aside to take the number one position! The UK based steel tycoon is now in third position with an estimated $25US billion. He doesn't mind spending a little either, with a recent purchase of a 12 bedroom residence in London for $US100 million.
The biggest loser was the Russian oil billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The Russian government and Khodorkovsky just haven't been getting along too well lately, which has resulted in him being imprisoned and losing $US12.8 billion this year.
Other notables include Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart that was recently released from prison for insider trading. Her prison sentence had the opposite affect to Russia's Mikhail Khodorkovsky, as her wealth increased while she was inside. Stewart makes her entrance to the Rich List with an estimated $US1 billion. She went into prison with an estimated $US350 million and came out a billionaire, but still remains under house arrest.

NO ONE KNOWS. Explanation: Gates has given much of his PERSONAL fortune to a foundation and Buffett is in the process of doing the same.
Many "richest persons" keep the figures secret. Only they "know" what their fortune is.
Even the "real richest person" doesn't know, because he/she doesn't know the figures of other "rich persons"

Hard to say since most countries don't require citizens to declare wealth like the US does.
However, from what is available, it is Bill Gates.
