For Ms Bookish - actually I agree it is a bad attempt at humour, but since i also have a friend who has his leg amputated and who is always cracking jokes similar to the above, I think your ironic tones and judgmental approach are misplaced. Humour is one way of dealing with and overcoming misfortune. If we start feeling over-protective and over sympathetic towards people with disabilities, then we mark them out as victims and that is exactly what they don't want to feel like. If you don't experience real life, then I am sure there is a book that you could read that would get the message across to you.
