The Danube (ancient Danuvius) is Europe's second-longest river (after the Volga). It originates in the Black Forest in Germany as two smaller rivers—the Brigach and the Breg—which join at Donaueschingen, and it is from here that it is known as the Danube, flowing generally eastwards for a distance of some 2850 km (1771 miles), passing through several Central and Eastern European capitals, before emptying into the Black Sea via the Danube Delta in Romania.

The Danube has been an important international waterway for centuries, as it remains today. Known to history as one of the long-standing frontiers of the Roman Empire, the river flows through—or forms a part of the borders of—ten countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine; in addition, the drainage basin includes parts of ten more countries: Poland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, and Albania.

The names of the river (German: Donau, Slovak: Dunaj, Polish: Dunajec, Hungarian: Duna, Croatian: Dunav, Serbian: Дунав/Dunav, Bulgarian: Дунав (Dunav), Romanian: Dunărea, Ukrainian: Дунай (Dunay), Latin: Danuvius, Turkish: Tuna) are all ultimately derived from the Proto-Indo-European *dānu, meaning "river" or "stream".

I lived in Europe for several years, I have visited the Danube river many times, for both business and personal reasons.

Jovan, the Danube does enter Slovakia, it flows through the capital, Bratislava, it might be a bit confusing because Bratislava is situated actually on the border with Austria. I know, that's where I'm from! The river then forms the border between Slovakia and Hungary, as you say.

The Danube floats through many countries of Europe, starting from Germany and Schwarzwald mountain (on English it is translated as Black forest mountain). Then it floats straight through Germany, and passes the boarder of Germany and Austria. In Austria, the Danube floats through Linz and Wien (Linz and Wienna). It doesn't "enter" Slovakia, but Danube floats by borders of Slovakia and Hungary. It floats by that border for some time, and then the Danube enters Hungary, floats through Budapest, and, after "leaving" Hungary, the Danube again floats between borders of the two countries, Serbia and Croatia. Floating like that, the Danube enters Serbia. In Serbia, the Danube floats through Novi Sad, where it is connected with the river Tisa, and by doing that the water channel Danube-Tisa-Danube channel was made. The Danube-Tisa_Danube channel is the second of importance in Europe (after Danube-Maine-Raine channel). After Novi Sad, the Danube floats through Serbia's capital, the white city - Belgrade. The mouth of the Danube and the Sava river is situated in Belgrade and it is of a great significance for river transport and traffic of Serbia. After Belgrade, the Danube floats through Smederevo and some other smaller cities of Serbia. There are many shipyards across the Danube in Serbia, and they are usually cituated in cities and towns, like Belgrade, Kladovo, Macvanska Mitrovica, Apatin (border of Croatia and Serbia) and Zrenjanin. Also, one of the largest and the most important energy resource for Serbia is situated on the Danube, more precise Djerdap, where two hydropowerplants (Djerdap I and Djerdap II) had been built. After Djerdap, the Danube enters Bulgaria and floating by bulgarian and romanian border, it enters Romania, where it "heads for" the Black Sea where it disappears...

It definitely flows through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Roumania. Its source is in Germany, so it flows in Germany, but not strictly speaking through Germany. It forms the border between Roumania and Bulgaria, so part of it is within the border of Bulgaria but it does not flow through Bulgaria, as there is no part of Bulgaria on the north bank of the river. In the same way, Moldova has a small area on the north bank, but no channel of the river flows through it. The delta has many channels, some of which flow through Ukraine - including parts of some navigable channels. I have named ten countries. All ten have some part of the Danube within their borders - but they cannot all be said to have the river flowing "through" them.
