Look on the side of the mower to see if it is made by MTD. I know that some of the Cub Cadets are now made by MTD. MTD makes most of the cheap brands you see at many of your hardware stores. So you may be paying the high price for the Cub Cadet name but getting generic brand quality. I like Dixie Chopper lawn mowers, Grasshopper lawn mowers, and John Deere lawn mowers. Dixie Chopper and Grasshopper specialize in the zero turn radius mowers. John Deere has been starting to get into them, but they haven't been making them for as long. One good test is to check the thickness of the mower deck. Normally, the thicker the mower deck sheet metal is, the better the mower as a whole is made.
