3 man went to a motel. the man behind the desk said the room was $30,so each man gave $10 and went to room.later he realized the room was $25,so he sent the bellhop back to the guys with $5. on the way the bellhop couldnt figure how to split $5between 3 guys so he gave each of them $1and kept the other $2. that left the three guys paying $9 each for the room. 3x9=27 +the 2 that the bellhop kept =29. WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?????????????

You have moved two dollars to the other side of the equation by mixing the two perspectives of looking at it.

The 2nd way of looking at the payment is

3x9=27. THATS ALL THE MONEY PAID. But it's FROM that $27 that the bellhop took his $2.

27-2=25 left in the till.

The first perspective is

30-25=5 (to bellhop for delivery)
5-3=2 (bellhop keeps)

By switching where the bellhop got his money from (either it's from the $5 dollar overpayment OR it's from the $27 actually paid by the guests, NOT both) you obscure the bookkeeping.

Good question.

Okay, here is how to solve this logic problem!

So, each man paid 10 dollars, so there should be $30 in the cash register. The man behind the desk made a mistake, so he took $5 out of the register and gave it to the bellhop. Now the cash register has $25 dollars. The bell hop has $5 in his hand now. He gives one dollar to each man, so now each man as $1, and all three have a total of $3. The bellhop now only has $2.

So, let's add it up!

$ in the cash register + $ with the men + $ with the bellhop = ?
25 + 3 + 2 = 30! :D

Hope this helps!

By the way, it is good to visualize in your head what events are taking place to help you solve some of these logic problems. :)

the three men payed each other $25/3 approximately equal to $8.3333

after the bellhop gave the 3men a dollar each they have
$8.3333+$1 = $9.333333

the $2 must be divided again by 3 which is equal to $0.6666667
$9.3333333333 + $0.66666666667 = $10

3men x $10 = $30

It is due to perception. As far as the men are concerned they paid $27 ($10 ea - $1 they got back = $9 ea * 3men = $27) but in reality they paid $28 ($30 - $25 + $3 = $28).
