My buddy has a big plot of land, and he want me and some friends to come over to camp out and make a bon fire. We also plan to set up tin cans to shoot them for fun. He has never done this before, and I am wondering if either of these activities are legal? It is his land, and his neighbors said they don't care.

You have to check with the local authorities. Take for instance Colorado right now. Absolutely no open fires or fireworks allows. The Governor just declared it. Your local police will know the city ordinances and the state laws.
Each state is different.
In MO you can shoot on your own land, like a firing range but you have to make a back drop, like a dirt hill to shoot into and there are feet and depth requirements for it.

If he lives within city limits, then no. If he lives out in the country well outside of any city limits then usually that is perfectly legal.

You would have to check local ordinances to find out for that area. Call the city or county.
