As well as the quote from Douglas Adams that Caus provided, I also once heard Douglas Adams say that he tried a few different numbers and that was the only one that made him and [some other people, I can't remember the details right now] laugh, so he picked that one.

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.

it was in the book and the author is really weird and it is actually triligy, with five books... weird. but if you want to know track the author and ask him, send him an email or something.
