In my youth, it was used as a slang term indicating an item that had been stolen or illegally obtained.
Later on, "rather ripped" evolved into a term indicating a person's over intoxicated state.
Within the last decade it transcended into describing a person posessing a well sculptured physique.
Recently, a rock group (Sonic Youth) released a cd entitled "Rather Ripped".
Lastly, "rather ripped" can also mean the term used to "copy" a file (usually from a cd) using Windows Media Player from one media to another. aka "ripping files".

I believe "rather ripped' is what happens when you know you're a size 12 and try to squeeze yourself into a size 6.
