I have a 2 month old and she often gets attention and I get unwanted advice in parks, mall, elevators.

Reply with "huh?!" in some obscure foreign language. If you live in a big city (where there may be a lot of different languages spoken), make up your own sentence in a made-up language. That will shut them up fast!!

Why would you want to fend it all off? Some advice is actually really good. When my 2 were young I got it all the time and sometimes I actually took the advice and am so glad I did!
Everyone thinks they are going to be the best parent ever, but even those need advice from time to time.

It is human nature to adore new babies, they are all sweet and lovely at that age. Just smile sweetly and nod in the right places. You don't have to take the advice, but neither can you pick and choose who you want to give it to you either!

If you really want to fend them off, just tell them politely that you know everything there is to know about raising a new baby and they are wasting their time by being courteous in talking to you!!

When you recieved unwanted advice from strangers, or even friends and family I always say "I'll take that into consideration" it's a way to be polite and not commit to anything. The advice giver then knows you were listening, which I think is all they want anyway.

regardless to if you attempt to fend it off you always run into someone who will try to force you to listen to it .
after a while of getting unsolicited and unwanted advice from strangers who would tell me the most ignorant things i started just ignoring people out in public. or used the OH look at the time we must hurry .
i was amazed at how people told me to do things that could actually harm my baby like kayro syrup in their bottles . i was forewarned by my babies doctor that it can cause botulism .

Just smile and listen...ppl are meaning well. Everyonce in a while someone will even actually give you some useful advice.

Even after baby #2 I was still open to advice!

Really? Did that work for you? How great! Well, thank you!

... and other diplomatic BS answers. :-)

The only time I got MAD was when a woman saw my then 14-month-old son with a pacifier and she said "Lady, you need to get that pacifier away from that boy! He's too big for that!" I nearly handed her my son and said "OK ~ YOU take it away." Not only was I insulted because she had NO IDEA how attached my son was to his paci, but she was rude. My husband grabbed my arm and made me walk away.

Ignore it and don't ask for it. Or hand your baby to the people giving the advice when it has a very poopy diaper. That usually works.

Just thank them politely and move on. This happened to me a LOT...and you know what...a good deal of the time, the advice I got (from older women whose kids were grown or from grandmothers) really is true, and helped me! If you have people telling you all kinds of crazy stuff, or telling you stuff about SIDS to try to scare you, tell them, "Thanks for your advice, but my child's pediatrician has told me otherwise, and I feel more comfortable taking her advice."
