Very few artists write their own "sheet music". Many do write or compose their own lyrics and/or melodies. Many artists don't read music. The Beatles were among the best, writing and composing.
Most depend on professional writers who make a career of writing. They discard thousands over years. A few hits come from unknowns. Not many.
I am unknown/trying. lol

Some do, some don't. I write all my own lyrics& music, but hate to read or write sheet music, (although I can, I am just more of a play by ear person) There is a wonderful software program that if you have all the proper equipment, you can play the song on a keyboard, and it will record it, and print it out as sheet music. Great for artists like me; saves a lot of time!

The majority of singers do not write their music. Several buy them from other songwriters who write and sell for a living. Some singers however, do write their own music. It depends on which singer you are talking about.

Some songwritters only write the lyrics. Some write the lyrics and compose the music. You see, you don't need to know how to play every instrument to create your arrangements... only to know the basics of Music. Today is really easy to write a sheet music with the proper software... you write your arrangements and it will play it with the musical instrument you choose. That way, you can write all your arrangements and hear how will it sound mixed up.

yes, the singer/songwriter writes his own stuff. Most of the time nowdays there is a seperate entity that writes the songs and sells them to the singer though.

The talent pool is very shallow anymore.

Some of us do! If I'm writing for piano, I write sheet music, but guitar, I write chord charts.

Anvil Studio is a download that I recommend. It automatically turns the format into midi and plays virtually any instrument for a certain track. Check it out :)
