skulls have been found from present time to 1'000's of years ago that had holes either cut or drilled into it - the theory is for relief. scientists can tell that the patient survived. there is a term for this drilling/cutting into the skull but it's not a present time term - in other words not used when surgeons do it today.

Actually, although rare, trepanning does still occur today by people who are looking to expanding their consciousness.

It's not a recognized medical treatment for anything, but there are a handful of doctors who will perform the procedure on request.
