no, this is not legal, if he knows you are not familiar with the rules, a landlord will try and do this to people, look in the phone book and get info about tenant rights org. they will tell you the same thing and offer you some real good advice

I hope you didnt sign!!! I think he also has to give you a 30 day notice, but I am not sure, so you have time to find a new place if need be. $200 is a huge increase in rent!! I am guessing your landlord did it so you would move out since you have past due rent and he doesnt want to evict you beause that will drop your credit a ton and then you will never find a place to live with an eviction. You might have to wait a year before you can find a place that will let you put your name on a lease.

What does the contract say first of all, if its says that is is such n such a month then no he can't he has broken the contract. If it was that he can raise the rent its usally 4 weeks notice before he can do so. But anyhow go see ciztiens advice.

If you signed a lease, locking you in to a fixed rent rate. He would not be able to raise the rent until you had to re-sign a lease.

Its legal if its in the contract, and is not illegal if this issue is not addressed in the contract. So long as you are in the period of the lease, you pay what is agreed upon.
