I'm answering this question even though I didn't have a natural birth. I don't believe in being stoic and enduring that much pain when we have medicine available to us to help us out, but to each their own.
I had an epidural and it went fine. As long as you hold still when they're inserting the needle (which goes very fast), there is no problem. It helped relax me very much and made for a stress-free birth, which I think is really important. If you're stressed, the baby is stressed, in my opinion.

When I went into labor I was 4 cm dilated and I was in so much pain (my water broke and I went from 0 contractions to HARD contractions every 1.5 - 2 minutes) and I couldn't relax and breathe through them. I tried and tried and I wasn't progressing at all. I was planning on a natural birth. I decided to go for the epi because I just couldn't take it anymore. By the time they gave me the epi I was 5 cm and when the pain went away I was so relieved and I took a nap. After an hour of sleeping, I woke up and they told me I was at 10 cm and it was time to push. It was because of the epi that I was able to relax and let my cervix open. I will get an epi again, definitely. Hope that helps.

Well, I sort of did both. To explain: I made it to 9 cm, asked for epidural...stupid...they tried to do it (2X) didn't take until I started pushing. I will never get the epidural again. The pain of labor is horrible...but it is temporary. Women have been doing it for years. Take some classes...teaches you pain management. I made it so far I was just scared of the "ring of fire" when the baby actually comes out! LOL...thinking back, that was silly. Again, you're made to have babies...your body knows what to do. The epidural wasn't painful to me, but I wouldn't know b/c I was in HARD back labor at that point anyway. If you do decide to get it, be sure to get it BEFORE 9 cms...lol. Good luck!

Of course you can handle the pain, women have been doing it forever!! Think of it as "pain with a purpose" - both of my kids were born without any meds, and yes it's rough but there are no "after effects", I was up and moving around within an hour both times. You can do it!!

my mom said her epidural made it so she could barely push, making my birth last 11 hours! My two sisters, she didn't use anything and said it was faster and she was fine. The only thing is she said don't let them do an episiotomy (cut from ur anus to ur vagina) because THAT really hurst and essentially it's uneccesary, like that girl said ur body knows what to do. (They do episiotomies because the say it stops u from tearing which happens sometimes, but then ur cut open from ur butt to ur vagina...)

I once asked my mother if it "hurt" to have a child. Her response was "it hurts, but you forget about it immediately".
