Marie,
I WISH in the real world it were possible to have things the way you say. But I think that even if people were all independent, that would not change how people feel about the two extreme worldviews of liberals/conservatives and this splits the parties more than anything. The way that liberals in this country have gotten portrayed by conservatives (who support big business and are against most if not all social programs, except the ones for the war machine and business), is so distorted I don't even recognize them. I've never in my 65 yrs. met a liberal like the misguided, simple-minded ones they discribe. But I have met plenty of conservative, esp. Repubs (but Dems too) who are almost living stereotypes of a simple-minded, rigid anti-people (unless you're rich or aspiring ) conservatives.
I think the way you're thinking is like being in a fantasy world. It's a nice idea but people who are independents generally aren't in the fray. I don't believe their voice is heard so they have little to no effect. Females especially have been socialized to be peacemakers and I think more men should be and more women shouldn't be afraid to stand up and fight for things they care about. Women's issues, peace, helping people who are disabled, poor, elderly instead of helping the rich get richer which has been happening in a terrible degree are moral values that I think are worth fighting for.
Switzerland was neutral in WWII and that was, almost everyone agrees, worth fighting in. Being independent is like that. I like what Mark Twain said. He said he believed in the two-party system, that's why he was a Democrat, implying that at least two parties existed WITHIN the party. If you study the parties, there ARE big differences in them and I think the DEMOCRATIC PARTY in spite of its craziness is a better representative of the best of AMERICA.

I'm a Democrat (duh, I was born in Canada and am living in the US. Can't help it.) I think that the government should help citizens in cases of disasters (look at the Great Depression. Hoover didn't help at all) and should advocate peace more than war.
The Democrats have faults, I know that. But right now, the Republicans are lying and sending people to war for no reason, except to pay back all the oil companies that sponsored them in elections. Republicans say we have freed Iraq. We haven't. Iraqis fear to go out into the streets; at least Saddam Hussein kept them safe. Besides, we could have just given Hussein a billion dollars and he would have lived next to the White House if we asked! But of course, we wasted money to go liberate a country that hates us to the core.
But, you must think of your own reasons to support either party.

politics in general has and will always be a very hot button issue. i'm a registered democrat but come elections i'm picking who i think is best for the particular position. it really is, i feel, picking the lesser of two evils. now i'm only 23 and both presidential elections i did feel better choosing a democrat candidate verse the republican candidates. i don't always feel like i can't stand republicans but i do not agree with conservatives. and conservatives are what upset me and unfortunately republicans tend to be highly conservative. liberal should be a political party to register for. that would be me. people need to wake up and open their minds, it's 2006.

I am a Republican. The reason I state that is due to the fact I tend to agree with most of the policies. Note that I stated "most". There are things about Bush I don't care for as well, but I did vote for him.
Since I arrived at my political affiliation due to agreeing with MOST of the policies, it means I don't vote one way just to keep consistant with party lines. If I don't care for something the Republican Party is pushing, I simply won't vote for it or support it... I just tend to agree most of the time!
Strange how other posters to your question say that liberals and Democrats make up the party of broad-thinking, and yet they resort to name calling and gross generalizations!
