After all, people in Canada, Mexico and South America live in the Americas, too, And are Americans. Why do we Yanks feel we have sole proprietorship of the name?

That is a good question and one that has been asked for years, there is South/Central/North America..aren't all those people (by right) "Americans"?? I would guess since "The United States of America" is the countries name that the term "Americans" was tagged onto that areas residents as opposed to any other country. If there was a country called "Europa" I would imagine that those residents would be called "Europeans" even though many other countries are in Europe and all of those people are also "Europeans" or the country called "United Arab Republic" they would be called "Arabs" even though there are many other countries that are also considered Arabic. Its' all in the nomenclature and world acceptance of the name/title. That dosn't make it fair..only "accepted". Nye

Its the United States of America. we live in America which is made up of 50 states. so we call ourselves American.
To be fair Canada is in NORTH America, there's a South and Central.
They're the republic of Canada = canadians, the republic of Mexico = mexicans, the United States of America = Americans. It has nothing to do with ego, it's just that America is the name of our country.

We don't. Canadians and Mexicans can call themselves Americans if they wish.
I suppose those in the United States are the only ones with the courage to say it.

Since the term is generic I cannot see anything wrong in it after all it is your country, Canadians etc live in the continent not the country!
