Yup. Live in the FLorida Panhandle. Rode out Erin, Opal, Dennis and Ivan.....
I'm on the highest ground for 30 miles and live in a house that has only received minor damage since it's construction pre-WWII
To me, hurricanes are like Camping, just with better beds and worse Ventilation...

Pat

I lived in Halifax when hurricane Juan went to ground. I didn't know it was coming until my landlord came to put the washer/dryer up off the floor in the basement and my cat started asking weird. I was lucky enough to not have anything bashing against my window, but a couple of the other girls didn't get any sleep at all. I woke up once it was over.
We had no power or classes at university for a week. The city's trees were decimated, the public gardens will never be the same, the water front got torn to pieces and Point Pleasant park was nearly destroyed.
It was only a category 2 hurricane and it was scary enough, I'd hate to be through anything worse.

I live in Southeast Texas about 20 minutes from the Gulf Coast. Hurricanes are a huge possibility here. When I was younger, Hurricane Alicia hit, it wasn't that strong but it did major damage in our area. We lived on a cul-de-sac and somehow we were the only house on the street with electricity after the hurricane. We had trees on both sides of the house that fell but they fell on our neighbor's houses.
My parents hooked up several extension cords so our neighbors would have some electricity.
We had to leave for Hurricane Rita last fall and that was horrible. Everyone in Houston was so freaked out by the media that they evacuated before they were supposed to and we were blocked from every direction. We spent 29 straight hours in our cars on roads that had no gas and no places to eat.
I still get upset just thinking about it.

We live close to Galveston Island.Running from Rita was a living nighmare ! I-45 in Houston was a parking lot !
It took us 28 hours and only got 45 miles away with a family member that was due in three weeks. No gas was available, everything was closed and no place to relieve yourselves.
My pregnant niece needed to go the restroom for over three hours but no place to go.There was a motorhome close to us and I asked the driver to let her use their toilet. He was more than happy to do that.
We had plenty of bottled water with us,if I saw families with young children or babies I would go give them water.
Everyone was really helping each other as much as possible concidering the circumstances.
Those that have never gone thru a hurricane, concider yourself lucky !
We don't plan to evacuate next time.Although we were gone for two days,it was still very stressful
We had a new addition to our family the same night we got home and all the hospitals were closed. After many phone calls,Memorial Houston delivered our baby !

I live in the State of Florida. I've lived in the state of Florida for about 21 years now and My first experience was in 2004 when we got nailed by Frances and Jeanne. We were not affected by Ivan (The pan handle was) We were supposed to have been hit by Charlie, but he took a hard right turn and went south, just south of us instead (hit Orlando which is about an hour away) he was small in size, but big in power (devastated Punta Gorda). I was raised in South FL (east coast) and currently live in central FL (Dead center of state). By the time Frances and Jeanne had reached us it was a CAT 1 storm (which is still scary) trees fell, roof shingles were blown off, signs were down and there were some towns that were flooded. My Mom, Sister and her kids are still in S FL. Wilma's eye went right through them last year. I'm waiting to see how this season is going to go.
Oh yes, I remember Andrew Well. Only he hit south of us at that time.

I live in the very Liberal State of Illinois, so we don't see much Hurricane action here. Instead, we get tornados!
