Practically? Yes.

They discuss what they should vote on. They 'make stuff' to vote on and they vote. That's about it if you want the very simplistic version.

It is called representing the voter. You (if you did that) voted for that man or woman so he/she can represent you in congress. It is your congressperson. The only power he/she has is the vote realistically speaking.

But.. to be able to vote they have to know whats going on so... 99% of the time they sift though tons of information to at least seem informed. They fight of lobbyists.. or have dinner with them. Get hounded by the press because they said something stupid.

But basically you are right. What a senator is there for is to vote.

A Senator is supposed to represent his state and the best interests of his constituents to the Congress. This may be for items which affect his state or interests of the federal government. He may introduce bills of legislature for new ideas, improvements, amendments, etc., to the senate. He may work with committees which specialize in certain national concerns.

Senators create laws and send them to the president so the president can decide whether to approve of the bill or disapprove. If he approves, it becomes law. If he disapproves, the senators reexamine the bill and rewrite it. They send it one more time to the president. If he still disapproves, the senators vote on the bill. If two-thirds of the senators approve the bill, it becomes law, whether the president likes it or not.
