I haven't tried the toothpaste remedy myself, I just read about it in one of the papers recently. I think you are supposed to use plain old Colgate toothpaste, not gel. I think you are supposed to spread it gently on the dvd and let it dry. After it has dried, take a soft cloth and rub off the toothpaste in the direction of the grooves. Hope it helps.

Toothpaste is actually a mild abrasive, not sure if you really want to try that. You can get a DVD cleaning kit that uses a liquid - may be more in order and do less damage tot the DVD. Once you get it to play you should make a copy of it. If it is a commercial DVD, making a copy is illegal - welcome to catch22.

if the scratche you want to fix on the dvd is to deep it wont work no matter what you try. so go out and buy new dvd

Crazy, but try peanut butter or toothpaste. That actually works sometimes. Other than that..it's pretty much doomed.

there is a product called ....something liek skip doctor or skip dr
it has worked for me on some scratches/ repairs.
they sell it at frys electornics, and amazon
