Well it formed rather than was created. As the matter from our solar system cooled, it gathered together undr the force of gravity in orbs of various sizes and also of various constituent elements. Thats why some planets are Gas and others rock. As they cooled they were hit by meteors and the like which contributed to their topography. Add to this volcanic activity from the hot core and we end up with a 'bumpy' sphere! meteors also carry elements from other worlds and these have been added to the early atmosphere. The primitive atmosphere largely comprised ammonia ( amongst other gasses) These coupled with UV from the sun formed amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins which in turn are the building blocks of life. From this point on, all life evolved.

Three theories...

1. Biblical: God created the Heavens and Earth in 6 days, rested on the 7th and continues his/her role in creation

2. Big Bang: Billions upon billions of years ago an explosion occured of great magnitude and various forces in the universe (gravity for one) caused the material ejected from the force of the blast to slow and conglomerate forming the Earth and other planets. No mention of God here, just pure science.

3. Intelligent Design: Any combination of 1 and 2.

Earth is believed to have formed around 4.55 billion years ago out of the solar nebula, along with the Sun and other planets. The moon formed soon afterwards. Initially molten, the outer layer of the planet cooled, resulting in the solid crust. Outgassing and volcanic activity produced the primordial atmosphere; condensing water vapor, augmented by ice delivered by comets, produced the oceans. The highly energetic chemistry is believed to have produced a self-replicating molecule around 4 billion years ago, and half a billion years later, the last common ancestor of all life lived.
