If I take the battery cable off and clear the computer, I put the cable back on and start the car.....The light is off. I drove it for two hours and no light but as soon as I turn the car off then back on the check engine light comes on. It stays on at that point. Anyone know what it may be? I really dont want to pay someone to hook it to a computer.

It could be a EVAP code.Fords are notorius for them. Check the gas cap to make sure it is tight 1st. If not, then you may need to replace the gas cap. You can always go to your local Auto Zone. They will check the codes for free and recomend a repair for you.
Good Luck

The vehicle will have to make the same mistake several times in order for the MIL light to come on, so there is something wrong, it could be as simple as a sensor. All you are doing by dis connecting the battery cable is clearing the code(s) you are not attempting to fix the problem. Auto Zone advertises that they will scan your vehicles codes, now they are gonna try to sell you the part that their tool says threw the code. You can do that and you become a parts changer.
My advise is to find a shop that is honest, their technicians should be ASE certified and they will be able to determine what went amiss in your vehicle.
With what I read I believe you have a faulty oxygen sensor.

removing the battery cable all it does is clear the code.. when the light comes back on bring it to the zone and let them scan it.

If it comes on automatically after you start it and stays on, you have something that has gone bad and is actually setting the code when you start it up the first time (OBDII won't turn on the light till it sees the problem 2 times)

Some vehicles had evap issues but not really the montineer.. I say you either got a v-8 or the DOHC 4.0 and either one of the sensors got disconnectred (oil change places famous for that after changin the air filter) or you got sensor problems (probably the DPFE)
