communalism is something else but you probably mean 'communism'

Well in the Marxist theory, communism was regarded an 'ideal' realm of society in which everyone would contribute as they could and receive as they need. (Any earlier stage couldn't be regarded as Communism)

Socialism was a transitory stage on the way to communism.

Later on the terminology used in the Marxist theory was rather blurred and confused as Stalin declared the USSR had to head for 'socailism in one country' (as opposed to universal revolution rhetoric) and; the term 'communist' in the names of the leading parties in the Eastern bloc turned out to be the names of the concurrent regimes in those countries at that time.

Ahh...my forte.

These are the idealistic definitions...

Socialism: An economic system where, instead of government or private ownership, there's social ownership of the principle means of production. Also, instead of bureaucratic or capitalist management, there's Democratic management, where the Workers, Farmers, Consumers, Citizens, and Taxpayers run the industries through direct democracy and elected economic councils.
Communism: A moneyless, classless, democratic global society, where all people are equal and free, and all needs are met. Defined from the philosophy of Karl Marx and Fredrik Engles as expressed in "The Communist Manifesto."

Now, there are also modern, bullshit definitions...

Socialism: Where the government, through government ownership, higher taxes, and public works programs, enforce a degree of equality.
Communism: Where a single political party sets the policy for the government, and the government, through a police state, owns and runs everything while spying on their own citizens.

The first examples have never happened, but are often advocated by many people, all over the world (myself included). The later two are based on people who claim this and that, using rhetoric and images to claim that THIS is the glorious people's state.

And remember, this is from the horse's mouth. I'm actually a real, honest-to-Goddess classical Communist.

Seek Peace, Fly High, Find Love,
Poncho.

There are styles of each, yet in an fairly basic clarification, Socialism keeps a intense authorities authority over technique of production and income in evaluation to Communism. In Communism, the authorities has more effective administration over existence selections in a more effective fixed marketplace and earning potentials. at the same time as the united states isn't meant to be both Socialist or Communist, both sorts of authorities were in authorities for hundreds of years. that is taken into consideration necessary that if the united states gov needs to make a replace in how they relate with persons, communities contained in the united states, or others in distinct international locations, that they first comprehend a thanks to appropriately characterize our values alongside with a element of integrity. There are already preexisting guidelines that can not be omitted.

in communism all property is "communally" owned
in socialism property is owned by the state

It's much like the distinction between a democracy and a republic...the terms are of ten (mistakenly) used interchangably.
That's the simple answer, but these systems have never existed purely. The states that we think of as communist ie China..are more socialist. Some we call socialist really have some Govt. social welfare systems but are not truly socialist states as they still allow private ownership of property. Rarely is anything black and white.
