I own a dell laptop, and today when I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't work. It was working fine last night, then I turned it off properly (by going to the start menu and all) then this morning nothing, I push the on button over and over and nothing happens. I have no idea what's wrong with it and I'm not great with computers. I unplugged it, messed with the cords and outlet. When I unplugged it the green light came on that means it's not plugged in and running on the battery...but it still won't turn on not matter what. So since the green light came on, I know it's still functioning to a point, it just won't turn on!!! and I take online college courses so please help!!

This is embarrassing:( I don't see a reset button and I have no idea what to take out (I dont know where the battery is or the hardrive) Under the computer I see alot of screws and one thing looks like it could be removed...maybe that's the battery.

Ok it's a dell Inspiron 1000, the only life it shows is when I unplug it from the ac power adapter for awhile, then plug it back in. The green light showing that it's charging will show up for a bit.

I found the battery and I tried everything suggested, thanks everybody! but it's still not working so it must be the internal power module, like aeroman said. So how much will it cost to repair? ...I'll probably make that a new question too. but thanks again everybody for being so helpful!

unplug your laptop, turn it upside down and remove the battery, that's a pretty thick thing on the bottom you can remove. don't reinsert the battery and plug again. if it starts now, then you need a new battery - if not, and i fear it doesn't start, then the most likely issue is a defective internal power module and you have to get your laptop to repair.
p.s. that's precisely what happend with my Dell notebook (these internal power modules seems to be the weak point).

Does the fan run? Does it sound like its trying to run or absolutely nothing happens?

I would need more info because normally if you dont SEE anything happening on the screen, it means you need a new screen or the light that turns the screen on. There is this little light near the screen that turns the light on your monitor or it just looks black. Or sometimes the screen dies and you cant see anything, but I need to know if your computer is at least making some noise as if its trying to turn on.

If NOTHING happens, then something might be wrong with your battery or circuit that turns the computer on. Try taking the battery and unplug it. Then take the hard drive out for about 5 minutes, then put it back in. Then try taking the battery out for a few minutes and then put it back in. Hold down the power button for a few seconds and see if that helps.

Edit: Also does your laptop feel hot? Maybe your CPU got overheated and the fan is not working properly. Normally when a computer does not turn on whatsoever, it means a circuit got overheated and it got damaged.

try taking the battery out!! leave it for a few minutes, then reinsert battery and try an start it up....

EDIT: The battery I think is on the side, there should be a couple of sliders on the back that you need to hold before the battery will pop out!! some dell laptops have 2 batteries!

It could be a problem with your Motherboard, try hooking it up to another screen. But if you know that it doesn't start at all, and has no hope of displaying anything it could be a defective internal power module. If it is a problem with the lcd screen, it will cost you several hundreds to fix.

chances are there's something loose on the inside...instead of taking it back to the warehouse why don't you go online & print the schmatics out, get some tools & open ur laptop yourself to see what the problem is. we had to do that in one of my college classes & if ur really good @ directions, you wont mess it up. trust me its a lot better than sitting on the phone on hold for 2 hours with a DELL rep. who's not gonna answer.

Turn it up side down and look on the bottom . You should see a small hole that says "reset" push the tiny switch in the hole with a small object such as a tooth pick and see if that works .
