I was recently let go from a job. I was there for more than three months, but according to the manager, the first three weeks were training (this was news to me, and no agreement was signed to this accord). When I called the Ministry of Labour - they informed me that I am owed a week's pay and if I do not receive this, then I can make a claim etc.. etc..

Also, I was let go on the phone when I was at home, and was told that they would not pay me for the hours already worked until I returned their key - which I sent via registered mail . Again, Ministry of Labour informed me that it is illegal to hold money that was already earned.

I have informed my former manager of this via email and also sent this by fax - that was this morning - no news yet, but what would my next step be if they refuse either?

You will have to patiently endure doing the paper process and make out a report with the Ministry of Labour, and/or at the unemployment office, if you want to get paid. Good Luck!

You've given them the benefit of the doubt - it's time to file the claim that the Ministry of Labor referred to when you spoke with them.

You just have to ask yourself if a week's pay is worth the red tape.

Depending on how much they owe you, you might have an attorney compose a letter and send it to the company to scare them into paying you. I did this with an employer that owed me for travel expenses, AND deliberately messed up my 1099. They paid me and fixed the form.

Go into the office or store and make a BIG scene, if you have the nerve. No one wants to be publicly embarassed. Refuse to go into the office to talk it over. Yell and scream and just about your mistreatment until he cuts you your check. It's your money, you earned it. I wouldn't leave until he paid me, and frankly, I'd want it in cash...or ounces and pounds, whatever you guys use over there.

I'd say threaten them with a sexual harassment suit. Especially if you're a guy and so is he. Say he fired you becuase you wouldn't requite his advances. Say you'll go to the media with your story. You'll likely get paid lickedy spit.
