I think Gaydar was invented by the Americans as a sitcom plot device and has been introduced over here with the idea that it is difficlut to spot a gay man or a lesbian.
OK, it sometimes is but being able to spot a gay man or a lesbian can be a challenge as many times there is not an obvious sign or signs that a man is gay and a woman is a lesbian.
Well, being hetrosexual and male I would not mind the job of getting two attractive women together and seeing if they're lesbians.
Now thats a job advertisement I would like to see.

It exists. I'm lesbian, and I can detect the women easier than the men. It's not always this way though. Some gays are very accurate with both sexes. Some gays (like my gf) seem to have almost no gaydar at all.

I think that there is a certain amount of GAYDAR ability amongst those in the community and those very in tune, yes.
Although everyones experience of living as a homosexual, coming out, finding a partner etc is different, there are likely to be social responses within communities that are the same for everyone. The way people react to these, although different will share similarities. I think that this is the reason why people are able to spot other homosexuals (reasonably) well - they are recognising certain traits charecteristic of people within the gay community, subject to life experience.

I have no idea if a woman is gay or bisexual. And bisexuals are hard to read anyway. I can usually tell if a man is interested in me though by his eyes. And the way he looks at me. But other than that I have to see if his manner is effeminate which turns me off anyway. I am a bisexual g0y and I like men who know they have a pair. I am not effeminate and don't like guys to play those gender bending games. I can't always tell if a guy is into guys though. G0ys are not as easy to read as gay men. We are generally a lot more subtle, and a lot more discrete. I may talk as though I am out and confident in this forum but I am not someone that you would pick out and say he is into dudes. I am masculine and I maintain my persona as a man If I am checking out a guy I will be admiring the work he has done to keep his body in shape. And will generally tell him that. Since that is what I am into straight guys just take it for what it is worth and feel good about themselves not threatened, if the guy is g0y it might lead to something, it might not, it just depends on how much time he has to invest in the trust factor. So if that is gaydar I don't know but that is what works for me.

I certainly think it exists. I have to say, I have gaydar like no other lol.
I think its more of a body language thing [someone said that earlier].
or just the way someone appears physically; like a guy with a certain ear peirced or whatever.
For some reason, a lot of gay guys have *that* voice you know?
with like the lisp and stuff haha.
I don't know any straight guys with that lol.
Its also just from experience and hanging around with a bunch of lesbians/gay men and seeing how they act.
But someone said that its hard to tell now because of bisexuals [which can be true].
Me being bisexual myself, you could look at me and probably tell I like girls/support gays. I wear a rainbow wristband all the time, my haircut is short, and I listen to pretty much every gay/lesbian artist there ever was haha.
There's a lot of different clues that hint to someone's sexual preference, physically or not.
I'm not saying that you can look at someone and instantly you know their sexual preference [although sometimes that is the case].
Some lesbians/gays have to "look straight" to their peers because of homophobia and such. But once you get to know the person, its easy enough to tell, for me anyways.
There's just something about them, I don't know what it is lol.

Sometimes, with the the really obvious signs- ie. voice, hair length and dress.
But metrosexuals and bi's make it harder for all of us these days. I used to think I had a well tuned gaydar, until I joined my uni's queer department and realised that I really wouldn't have had any clue the bisexuals there actually swung the other way too...I suppose this could be a good thing...
Though of course, now the only way to met people are gay clubs and events, and internet dating...*sigh*

If it does then those damned metrosexuals are playing havoc with it - as decoys!
Seriously though, the term - if it truly exists as an available function among homosexuals in society - will probably be founded more on body language as read subconsciously, rather than some sixth sense.
An anecdote for you: I was walking from one end of the high street to the other and I saw an attractive bloke stood outside a shop; leaning against the portal. It was only when he smiled back at me, with a cheeky grin and a glint in his eye, that I realised I had looked him up and down...

It's all in the eye contact.
I can generally tell a lesbian, but I'm not that interested in gay guys, so I can't say about them.
Does gaydar exist ? Definitely.

Having been a lesbian for most of my life I thought I'd honed my gaydar perfectly until the new trendy phase of straight girl on girl came into the social arena, now......well it just seems that all women are up for it and want to play.....

jack from will and grace is said to have the most finely tuned gaydar in manhattan. on 20/20, they tested a group of people to test whether or not they had gaydar. they all thought that they did, but everyone was wrong.
