Even though the Miami Dolphins of 1972 did go undefeated, it is interesting to note that they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers by only four points (21-17) and the Washington Redskins by a touchdown (14-7) in the AFC championship and Super Bowl, respectively. For one year dominance, they definitely did do what they needed to do in order to get to the pinnacle.
For dominance in an era, the Steelers from Super Bowl IX to Super Bowl XIV were truly the standard to which other teams needed to go. They went from being a smashmouth running and defensive juggernaut to becoming a more aerial based and more bend but don't break team during their run. And, the auguably best team defense EVER (sorry, Buddy Ryan and da Bear of da Fridge, Singletary, et. al.) came in 1976...look at these defensive stats:
In stretch of 8 games, the Steelers "Steel Curtain" Defense had 5 shut outs and gave up only 22 points. That's fewer than three points per game. Sixteen of those points came in one game against the Houston Oilers. Besides that Houston game, the Steel Curtain yielded inly three points apiece to Miami and Cincinnati, and shut out the Giants, Chargers, Chiefs, Bucs, and Oilers. At one point, the Steelers has a streak of 22 consecutive quarters - 5 1/2 games - without giving up a touchdown.
And the scores:
@ Oakland Raiders 28-31
Cleveland Browns 31-14
New England Patriots 27-30
@ Minnesota Vikings 6-17
@ Cleveland Browns 16-18
Cincinnati Bengals 23- 6
@ New York Giants 27- 0
San Diego Chargers 23- 0
@Kansas City Chiefs 45- 0
Miami Dolphins 14- 3
Houston Oilers 32-16
@Cincinnati Bengals 7- 3
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 42- 0
@ Houston Oilers 21- 0
They didn't go to the Super Bowl as they had some key injuries (both Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier) that hurt them against Oakland in the AFC championship game...and 8 of 11 defensive starters went to the Pro Bowl.
I digress...but you see, there is no other answer than those Steelers, who could have beaten most any other team from any era, given their balance, poise and heart.

in the 1950's the Browns played in 10 championship games winning 7 of the them. the first year in the nfl they won the championship. can you imagane any team pulling of that type of run now? from the hall of fame website
The teams of the AAFC basically were of comparable quality to those of the NFL but, in the first 10 years of post-World War II pro football, the Cleveland Browns proved to be the best in either league. With such all-time greats as quarterback Otto Graham, fullback Marion Motley and tackle-kicker Lou Groza leading the way, Cleveland won all four AAFC championships and amassed a 52-4-3 winning record. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, many insisted a major reason was the Browns' dominance that eliminated any viable competition.
The AAFC-NFL settlement called for the Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts to join the NFL. Many NFL diehards, still not convinced the Browns were for real, expected Cleveland to fail badly when they played against the established NFL teams. But the Browns quickly proved their domination was no fluke by opening the 1950 season with a stunning 35-10 victory over the defending NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles. Cleveland then won the NFL Eastern Conference championship for six straight years from 1950 to 1955 and NFL titles in 1950, 1954 and 1955

There are different times where different teams were the best, for example, the 1980's was dominated by the 49ers, and the early 1990's was dominated by the Cowboys. But I don't think there is a best NFL team ever.
Maybe the 1972 Dolphin Team.

there is not any way and NCAA team ought to conquer any NFL team, inspite of in case you made an excellent team. the speed of the NFL is a lot speedier it really is why any such enormous quantity of gamers have issues shifting over. The NFL gamers are also larger and at some factors 5 or more effective years older and they comprehend the game so a lot more effective positive. in the journey that they performed the Patriots im no longer particular they might even score.

Hmmm well since it was WAS and doesn't neccessarly mean a specific year then I'd say the 49ers because how bad they stink now. The Steelers still are great so can't put them in that was. If you go by years would still say the '72 Dolphins because they went undefeated. That thing of the 85 Bears would have-that and about 50 cents anymore will buy you a cup of coffee. Would've Could've Should've. That's why a GREAT team adjusts.

Have to agree with Bill S. The 1985 Bears were the most dominant team that the NFL has seen.

85 Bears, the most feared Defense in the history of the NFL. Everytime a defensive team goes to the Superbowl, you hear them being compared to the 85 Bears. They may have gone undefeated that year if Buddy Ryan would have put in the nickle defense.

Some may say it was the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the NFL's only perfect season. Great team, many star players, Don Shula was a legendary coach.
