there is a kind of grass which is grown separately and then laid on a lawn. what is the name of this grass, what is the procedure called. what are the specific conditions under which it should be grown first?

It is called "Sod".

It can be many different grass types. They grow it in a field until it is mature then peel it up and sell it in pieces usually about 18" X 36".

SOD comes in varieties and usually specific to regions.

Here in Central Florida, St. Augustine is the most popular.

It's grown as most other grass is then harvested with specific tools and shipped to distributors, etc.
