By grunting or making a loud noise, you mask the sound of the ball hitting the racquet. Theoretically, it makes it harder for the opponent to judge the velocity of the ball. Normally, the opponent can hear the ball strike the racquet. And using this audible information, the brain can track and better judge the speed of the ball. Take away te audio and the opponent now must use visual cues only.

The exhaling of air when hitting an object is said to give more force to your movement. It's commonly taught in the martial arts and is called a Kiai.

See, I like to call those kinds of people 'grunters.' They don't only grunt during tennis, but they grunt during every kind of situation. When they get up, they grunt. When they eat, they grunt. When they get pissed, they grunt. When they have sex, they grunt. It's just their way of communicating.

Making the noise actually does help with power because the lungs are compressed after the noise which melps with moveability.
