That's a tough one because I think they both are painful to listen to. I guess REM because U2's last efforts have sucked, in my opinion, and Bono gets on my nerves.

I prefer REM, they have been consistently better over their career, whereas U2 are a bit hit & miss.

Oh yeah and Bono really gets on my nerves.

U2 because their music has meaning, it varies and is not monotonous as REM overall. U2 has political aim and leaves you thinking when you've heard their music.

U2 - but only because of The Edge. Who has the b*lls to call themselves simply "The Edge"? Can't stand that Bono guy.

u2 even though bono kinda gets on my nerves he is always trying to help make the world a better place. i have to admire him for that.
