On Tuesday night I developed an aching, stretchy pain from my left shoulder/upper back stretching up the side of my neck. I have had some pain in my left arm- fuzzy. The pain gets worse if I turn my head one way, but is ok to turn the other way. My muscles were quite bunched up and tight that day (traffic and football).

Heat seems to relieve it temporarily and it responds to ibuprofen. Have had it 2 full days now and sick of it. Any ideas?

Sounds like you may have slept funny and your nerves and muscles are all stretched in the wrong way. Or you may have a trapped nerve. It will just need to wear off, i know it's a pain, literally but just keep taking the painkillers, if it is still bad after the weekens go to your doctors as it may be more serious, or he/she could refer you to a specialist.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse and I can tell you that what you have is an (and I'll shorten the name) inflamed sternomastoid muscle. Pain killers especially what you have taken are a waste of time and Ibuprofen is a bad drug to take. Do not use heat you are making it worse. Get an Ice pack and place it at the back of your neck. Aromatherapy oils in your bath works wonders I use 3 drops of sweet marjoram-2 drops of roman chamomile and 2 drops of mandarin. If you want to use a massage use the same quantities to 15ml of carrier oil such as sunflower or grapeseed oil. Apply nightly at first then slowly reduce it to every other night. If you want any more help e mail me but give me your full e mail address for a reply.

Go to the doctor asap, I had a sore neck & shoulder last year which turned out to be a viral infection which was attacking the muscles on my right side. I now have long term right sided facial paralysis & persisitent neck pain.....go get it checked out, I wish I'd gone sooner!!!

Might be. I would suggest a good chiropractor. Heat and the ibuprofen will help with the muscular pain and discomfort, but, to get to the nerve, you might need to move the bones around to ' unpinch ' it.

Good luck

You need to apply a combination of heat and cold over a period of about 48 hours before seeking medical attention.

Talk to a doctor or chiropractor. This kind of thing does not sort itself out without help.
