It isn't Galileo, that's a common misconception. Check the Wikipedia entry for a history of the theory.

People have believed that the earth was round for thousands of years. Contrary to current belief, even the ancient Greeks and Romans knew that the earth was round. Pythagoras proposed a round earth, and in 240 BC, Eratosthenes actually computed the circumferance of the earth with fairly good accuracy (2-20%, depending on the actual meaning of the unit of measurement he used).

Pliny the Elder, in the 1st Century, proposed that nearly everyone agreed upon a Spherical Earth. As to the actual first person to suggest a round earth, it's unknown, but likely to be an ancient greek mathemetician/philospher.

Contrary to some popular belief, it was a well-established fact that the earth was round by the time of Columbus. As a side fact, many thought the earth was the center of the solar system but they didn't believe that the earth was flat.

Galileo theorised (correctly) that the (round) Earth revolved around the Sun, which was charged with heresy by the Church, at the time, for daring to suggest that Earth was not the center of the known Universe. It was actually the Greek philosopher/mathemetician Ptolemy, that first (as far as I know) theorised a spherical Earth.

Chuck Norris did. He went back in time and told a foreign guy that the world was round and that he better tell every one or else he was going to kick him in the face... I think the weird speaking guy was Galileo.
