Well that depends on what he likes. Does he like sports? If so, just bring up the subject and ask him what his favorite sport is. If it is football ask him his favorite team and you can go anywhere, almost and find sports things so that will make shopping easy. Do the same with all other sports. Does he play a sport? If so be listening very careful to what he says, he might talk about new equipment. There is something that you can find out by listening,
Does he cook? If so, find out what kind of food he likes to cook. There are tons of stores that sell kitchen supplies and I'm sure you could find what he needs. If you are at an all time low and can't find ANYTHING, give him a card with money inside. Then he can buy what he wants without you having the frustration of figuring out what he likes! Hope I helped!

Only a friend? Because if he's single and you want him to be your BF then you naked is usually a good gift.

If it's purely platonic though I'd say a nice dinner or a gift card to a sporting goods store or hardware store. We usually like our big boy toys. If he's into his car you could get him a gift card for free car washes at one of those detailing places.

Give the gift of time...spend time with him by taking him to a movie, making him dinner, or going for a visit to the zoo or museum. Pack a picnic and go to the park. The greatest gift you can give is your time.

Give him a huge decorated shoppiing bag of the mainstays of a kitchen - laundry soap, dish liquid, sponges, teacloths, paper towels, Windex, etc. Guys are always (in general) not in good supply of these things....
