this may only be in the uk but along the path all round the city there are stud type things a few metres apart all down the road. then a bit further on there are a line of them going across the length of the path. i am totally stumped. can anyone help?

they are definitely not cats eyes. they are on the path and are small metal studs like on a football boot but shallower. they are not to alert drivers when they veer off the road cos they are up on the curb. the mounting of the curb would create more of a stir than a small metal stud which would make little effect on suspension. they also only have them on motorways.

Difficult to say without seeing them but it might be there to denote the limit of adoption, i.e. the extent of the Highway Authorities maintenance and legal responsibility.

Cats eyes are in the middle of the road, the things that reflect car headlights at night. The grilles on the sides of the road are there to make a terrible noise if you start driving over them, therefore waking up the driver if they are falling asleep at the wheel- hence they are most commonly found on long stretches of boring road.

I have asked my father this ( he worked in highways for 30 yrs) and he isnt sure but he thikns they might be where they take core samples of the construction and condition of the roads for maintenance

I think it's so that if you start to vere off the road the bumping and the sound will alert you.

these are cat eyes they can be seen at night due to the reflection of your headlights
