Because they are very lazy. They really don't think that it hurts the environment or animals. :(

Technically, they don't care about the sidewalk.
Look, let's say they actually took the time and trouble to find a trash can. The items do not disappear, you just don't see them.
They are either placed in a landfill, or dumped into the sea.
The bottle and bag on the sidewalk are not the problem, as far as nature is concerned. It is how they end up that is the problem. The bottle should be recycled, the bag should be incinerated to help provide the energy for it.
Don't confuse not seeing them, with them being gone.

I know exactly what you mean. I am constantly picking up trash everywhere I go. People have no respect. They don't care about mush except maybe themselves. It would be a nicer world if people would all pitch in and help each other and their environment. It's really very sad what this world is coming to and the people on it. I feel there are very, very few good people left that try and try to make this world a better place for ALL and it's not even appreciated by most. However, we need to keep trying to do what we can to help, even if it's just picking up some trash when you see it. Take Care. God Bless

They haven't been taught the value of the environment and do not have the long-range view that it will be important to their kids, grandkids, greatgrandkids. They are more interested in the NOW and material things. The environment is abstract to some people and they deal with the concrete (food, shelter, clothes, jewelry, iPods, shoes, for example). This crosses over all races, ages, and geographical areas.

Because they were taught not to care by the mentors that are around them.
Anyone who "cares" about nature should read "Mad Cowboy". It's very interesting insight into how our meat consumption tendencies and the meat processing industry are gradually destroying the environment.
I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan, but I'm strongly considering becoming one after reading that book.

Those people aren't just reckless with nature, they're the ones who cough into the phone when you're talking to them, they butt in line while you're waiting, they think their time is more important than yours. In short they're selfish, unthinking, shortsighted fools. Oh and if they smoke, they ALWAYS just use the ground as their ashtray

Maybe they want to provide work for the unemployed, doing menial tasks like cleaning the streets. Nah, they are just lazy.
But why do you ask questions to which you already know the answer?

They are selfish and lazy, thinking only of themselves and noones else. They just don't care about anyone or anything unless it affect them. Bad up bringing.
