Yes, you anodize Al (an electrochemical process) w/ a dye in the reaction bath.

Anodizing is a process that heats up chemicals in order to strengthen the metal it is anoded to.
This process also colors the metal.
Often, after strengthening metal, the metal is heat treated in an oven for certain periods of time, which also add to the discoloration of the original.
