i know e a d g b e but what key? I have a chromatic tuner and was tuning to the key of e but i keep breaking my little e string. What are the reasons for tuning to different keys? I'm kind of bluesy folky acoustic rock. What's the most common key? Thanks.

The most common key is C, but that shouldn't matter when you're tuning a guitar. I would reccommend just tuning to a piano, if you have one.

Many blues players tune to an open chord especially if they play with a slide. Open E and G are probably most common. To tune to an open E, they should be E, B, E, G#, B, and E. If you do this and strum the strings without fingering any notes , you will be playing an E chord. To prevent breking your small E string, start by tuning all the strings one step low. Then tune 1/2 step low and then tune them all exactly where you want them. The small E string breaks because there is too much tension on it. By tuning the strings close and gradually tuning them properly you will help relieve some of the stress on that string.

You can tune a 6-string to E A D G B E (Eddie ate dynamite, good bye Eddie) but the key you are playing in depends what chords you play. You can change the key using a capo. For example if you learn the chords to a song and the first chord is D but that is too low for you to sing, you can put a capo on the 2nd fret, raising the pitch of every note by 2 halftones, and now the first chord sounds like an E. Hope that helps.

Okay..

the Notes E A D G B E... form an A11th chord.

There are different tunings... but THAT'S the standard one.

Key is a relative thing... A song is done in the key of say "E" if that accomidates the voice who can sing in that key.

If the Key of E is too high... try a key which makes the notes in the melody LOWER.

The concept of Key... is pretty much irrespective of tuning.

tune to standard tuning and learn the scales and modes that go with each key. It'll take some time, but you'll get it.
