I was one of the lucky few to be out in the beginning of the worst storm in Toledo, OH. When I saw that everything was getting worse I decided to go to a friend that lives on higher ground and was closer to me. Unfortunately to get there I had to go through waist deep water with my jeep cherokee. And now this morning the check engine light is on and will not go off. Please tell me if the light will go off or if I should get it to the dealer ship. I don't want to pay money if it will go away later on or drive it if it is in danger. Please help!!! Thank God there is 4 Wheel Drives and tall cars for these situations...

No water got inside the cabin.
The jeep does sound rough when idling.
It is actually my parents jeep. :-( So I don't know too much about the jeep. I know that it is a black jeep with cherokee on the side, a six cylinder, I change the oil with 10W40 and there is parttime or full time drive on it. I think it is a 1995.

My guess would be that going through the water, you "cooled" the oxygen sensor down enough so that it was sending the wrong signal to the engine computer, thus turning on the "Check Engine" light. If you have an Auto Zone nearby, stop in, they will check for fault codes for free. If it's a downstream or a 2/1 O2 sensor fault, chances are you will be OK. They can also turn the "Check Engine " light off. Drive it a few days, and if the light comes back on, take it to a garage for repair. HTH, Good Luck!!

Go to the repair shop and have it looked at. But I would do a couple of test first before going to the shop. Check under the car, their should be a long bar connecting the tire call the axle. See if the rubber part is still there. Tell him to feel on it to see if it is not misplaced when it hit. Open the oil cap on the engine and look under the cap. If you see a milky oil, that means their is water in the engine. Do like 4 oil changes asap. And see if he still see the milky oil. If not do more. Check the Transmission fluid to see if their any oil in there too. Check the tires. check spark plug. if their is water wipe it.

does the engine run?
is it rough at idle?
if no to the second then just try driving on it for a week, water could've made it's way into one or more of the sensors and maybe (maybe) the engine heat will bring it right.
the engine won't be in danger but you may find it runs a little more sluggishly and may consume slightly more fuel.
and yep change the oil...
if not out by the end of the week take it to an authorized dealership.

The water soaked some wire and triped a sensor. Flooded cars can have flunky electrical problems. You should wait for it to dry. But the vechile should be safe to drive. Can you tell me more about the model year of the car?

Sounds like you got moisture into the intake. Drive it and it will eventually dry out. When the engine is cool, you can dump rubbing alcohol around on connectors to help dry things out.

Your vehicle is bringing up a cylinder misfire code.........that's why it says "check engine"..............your best bet is to change your spark plugs and maybe wires. Check your air filter to make sure it's not damp. Check cylinder injectors. Water must have gotten to them.

more than likely all you will need is a oil change but there could be some damage done, first thing to do is get the oil changed before anything else, b/c you obviously have water in your oil and that is not good, so do that today
