press ctrl alt & del together and select task manager, close programs that you recognise but are not actively using at the moment.
For instance right now I have a Kodak Update manager running on mine, its part of my digital camera software, I know for certain that it doesn't really need to be running as I am not doing anything with my camera so I have stopped it.
A lot of progs you install have components running in the background using up resources.
Don't close programs that you are not sure about as they may be windows components. Try looking up on google to see what they are.
It should make a small improvement. Also close programs in the task bar on the right hand side that you are not using. Try right clicking on the icon and see whether there is an option to close the programme.

If it was faster, and has become slow, you may be able to do something. If it has always been slow, there not much you can do.
First, make sure that you do not have any spyware running on the PC. Download both Ad-aware and Skybot Seek and Destroy and run them on the PC. As their list of what is considered spayware varies, one may caught something the other missing. Then go to Microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against any future infections.
Second, check how much free space there is on your hard drive. Go into My Computer, and right click on the local drive (C:) then select properties. If the pie chart shows less than 10% of the drive free, you need to delete some files or back some files up on CD or DVD to get them off your computer. Windows needs space for its temporary files in order to run.
Third, run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
In the window that opens go to the Start up tab
You will see a listing of all the program that are starting themselves everytime you turn on your computer. You will probably be able to turn off most (if not all) of those. Uncheck the boxes to turn them off. If turning one off causes problems with one of your programs, you can just go recheck the box to turn it back on. Looking at the file name and the directory it is in will often let you guess what program tht box controls.
If after all that, the laptop is still too slow, then you are probably going to have to purchase additional memory for the laptop.

There are a few things you can do to ensure better system performance without upgrading a system, defragmenting the hard drive is only one option. Also ensure that your page file (Virtual memory) has enough allocated space. Perform Hard disk cleanup to get rid of unwanted temp files. Find a free registry cleaner to remove useless, unwanted, or innacurate registry keys. Lastly, depending on your operating system, you can go to "start, run. and type in "msconfig" to launch your system configuration utility and go through your system start-up programs and edit the programs (memory resident applications) that start with windows, just make sure you do not disable any anti virus or anti spyware programs, those you need, most others you dont)

If you think that spyware/viruses could be slowing it down go to these sites {listed below} and get a free virus scan. You can re-format your hard drive. You would have to re-install anything that you installed after you recived the computer. You could try going and clearing out small things such as pictures and documents, or transferring those things to a Flash Drive. Which can be bought for about 20.00. Of course you will not be able to fit everything on there so a few will have to be bought.

if it is running slow it may need a anti-adaware program like Lavasoft anti-adaware which you can download free from the internet also try disc clean up as well. The only other way is to purchase a faster Processor. also Microsoft Defender is a good program for stopping spyware again you can download this from the internet free of charge.
