We are trying to end this inhumane practice in this country. Some people think only sick, old ,lame horses got to slaughter and this is simply false and pro slaughter propaganda.Even the slaughter houses report that well over 90% of the horse they slaughter are healthy and of good to above average weight.

Some people also think that if slaughter was outlawed there would be horses suffering in a field or running the street, yet another myth. The total number of horses slaughtered in this country is less than 1% of the total horse population of this country. If we have some many unwanted horses why are we importing them from Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered in the US.
The issue is coming up for vote soon and hopefully this will be outlawed once and for all. Here are some links with good info on how you can help stop this horrible practice.-Nicole

When some horses get so old they need to be put down or sent to the glue factory. I know that it's a terrible thought, but it's just like some dogs or cats need to be put to sleep when they are in too much pain or at the end of their life. The only thing is with horses, there would be a lot of good meat that should be used and that would go to waste otherwise if the horse was just buried and not slaughtered. It's not illegal, and in many respects they are needed.

Also, if many of the horses weren't slaughtered you would have an over-abundance of horses in the US and you would see many more horses being maltreated and not being fed or cared for properly. I would rather see an animal slaughtered than I would see it not being fed properly or maltreated. Why do you think our humane shelters are riddled with dogs and cats that have been maltreated? It is politically not correct to use them as meat. So many of them are euthanized and because of the overpopulation and nowhere for them to go many are maltreated. Horses are larger animals and require more care so the problem would just multiply if there were no disposal means.

Also, if the horse was a Kentucky Derby winner, they are not going to send it to be slaughtered unless that horse is critically injured. They invest millions of dollars in those horses. It would be stupid to slaughter it unless you couldn't save it. They could make thousands or enough to buy a new car off just one breeding or sperm for artificial insemination.

If you stop or shut down slaughtering houses that slaughter horses, you will not be fixing the problem. You will only be compounding the problem. Shut them down and see how the number of maltreatment cases goes dramatically up.

As long as there's a market for horsemeat, sadly, there will be slaughter. Horsemeat is exported to other countries as a delicacy for human consumption. It's the law of supply and demand, so you'll have to first find a way to replace that demand.

Also, you'll have to determine another 'solution' for old, unwanted and neglected horses. Many horses end up at the slaughter house simply because there are no other homes for them.

At the very least, I'd like to see slaughter houses run more humanely and have the methods used for killing horses, especially, modified. Currently, the stocks used for cattle are used on the horses, causing more injury and terror before death.

My advice to you is, get involved. Join a reputable organization and find out what it takes to change legislation. In May, there was a temporary ban on horse slaughter, so you know there are many who support your views. Websites such as equisearch.com & chronofhorse.com have discussed the slaughter issue at length, and they're a great place to network.

I' ve included a few links below to get you started.

In the U.S. there are 3 equine slaughter facilities, two are in Texas and one in Illinois. Contrary to popular belief, most often these animals are shipped for several days without food and water, crowded into semis designed for cattle and hogs. If a horse goes down, he will most likely be trampled to death by others in the trailer. Horses slaughtered in the U.S. are not used for glue, or pet food, the meat is irradiated, vacuum packed and shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption. All these slaughter houses are owned by foreign investors, seeking to make millions of dollars from unsuspecting Americans. There is a misconception that only old, injured, and not usable horses go to slaughter. Ferdinand, a former Ky. Derby winner was sold to a Japanese syndicate, to stand at stud, was slaughtered for human consumption while in Japan. These lists go on and on. All breeds are in danger and the chain starts at your local livestock auction. The horses that are purchased by the kill buyer are shipped and when they arrive they are shackled by their hind leg and hoisted up to have their throats slit. The captive bolt gun that is suposed to stun them into unconsciousness, does not often work on horses. for more info go to www.saddlebredrescue.com

there is actually nothing wrong with a slaughter house.

Although the world no longer uses animal fats for glue and paint (except on occation) the animal fat market is still big by way of soaps and cooking lard.

If you shut down the slaughter house, you will need to be buying these horses when they are no longer good for breeding. have fun with that.

If you are a hard working person, you could put together a list of signatures, i forget the word, of people who also desire to have this action banned, and submit it to your local government, wait for it to go thru all the red tape, and maybe you might get somewhere in about a year.
