Go to Start Menu, click RUN.
Type msconfig and hit enter.
You should see a pop up box.
Go to Startup tab and uncheck all the programs that you do not want on your start up.
This will prevent those programs from starting up when you restart windows.
This will usually make your computer go a little faster if you have do not have much memory on your computer.
You do not want a bunch of things running in your background during startup if it is not necessary.

Windows XP takes up A LOT of memory so you might want to upgrade your memory and get more ram. Once I upgrade my computers to 1 GIG, I never had those "freezing" issues. It would definitely improve performance.

Sounds like you have tried most of the common porblems. A couple other things you can look at...
How much free space is there on your hard drive? If it is below 10% that will cause freeze ups and slow downs. Windows does not have enough room for its temporary files. You will need to do some deleting and backing up of files.

A second is to check the amount of memory you have in the PC. I have seen cases where the PC had more than one memory chip and one of the chips went bad or come loose and so the PC suddenly lost half it memory and started to crawl. You can see how much memory Windows is seeing by right-clicking on My Computer, select properties, and going to the General tab. It is listed near the bottom right. Compare that to what it is suppose to have.

If you have made a majot change before the slow down began, such as installing a new program, adding or changing your virus scanner, etc., you may want to uninstall that program and see if that makes a difference.

Also, you can use the "msconfig" utility to see what is being loaded in the background and when your computer starts and see if there is anything (like most to all of it) you can eliminate during the boot up. Go to Start, then Run, and type: msconfig. Go to the start up tab and you will see a listing of all the programs being loaded when you computer starts. You can turn off these programs by unchecking them. Even if you were to uncheck them all, your computer will still start. You an not damage anything by turning them off. But it will keep them from preloading these programs and will remove icons for them from the system tray (down near the clock). So after you remove things, if one of out programs isn't acting right, you can just go back and recheck the box for it.

Finally, depending on the age of the PC, this may be the first signs that the hard drive is going bad. If it is more than a couple years old, you may want to replace it while the current one is still working and you can recover your picture, music, etc. off it.

Even if you do not replace the drive at this time, I would recommend taking the time today to do a backup to CD or DVD of any important files -- just in case.

make sure you have enough free disk space on your hard drive, as there may not be enough room for the windows paging file (always keep at least 1-2gb free on your hard drive).

you may have a virus or registry problems.
you can download an XP tuning utility here:

http://www.xptuneup.com/xptuneup_downloa...

this can clean up your system and registry for you. another thing which would be good for you laptop's speed is to uninstall all programs that you don't use anymore...

there are a lot of small things you can do to optimise windows XP...

try this site for some tips...

also, make sure there are no unwanted background processes or programs running on startup...

If you just installed antivirus that can be the cause. Sam ething happened ot me, but just because you scan dosen't mean there's not somethign on there?
Ask the obvious questions. Were have I been before thats happened, and what have I done? I've heard a lot of my friends goin to look at porn an same thing happening. Not hinting to anything, but there's a few things to think about.

most probably its virus
the description you have given - i am sure it is virus

if you have loads of personal / official / important stuff - whenever your comp is working - copy it down on your CD
then format the hard disk - install your window

this should work well

NOW whenever you want to load your backed-up info - run it for virus check

and try not to download free stuff like music, movies, games (except yahoo games - they r quite OK)

yoru puter should run like a horse

It might be that you have too many programs and stuff on your com...Try deleting some stuff. My com did that too until I deleted about 3GB of useless and old games and programs..
