Memory has a lot to do with level of interest.

You must be engaged and interested in the content in order for it to "stick."

It could be that the subject you are reading about may be boring to you. The best way to be an active reader in regards to this situation is to take notes while reading and then once your done reading write a summary based on your notes, and then write a summary based on what you remember writing in the previous summary. This will help you remember things about a subject you don't like reading about.

Non-fiction vs. Fiction. When you read non-fiction, it's probably just not your thing and you should take notes. I recommend Cornell notes. Check out this website for help: http://coe.jmu.edu/LearningToolbox/cornellnotes.html

It's really important to be able to read non-fiction (in case you're wondering) because most texbooks are non-fiction and this is what you'll be reading in college. So if you can get this non-fiction thing under control now, you'll be much more successful later.

Good Luck!
