If it's 8 minutes as everyone says, then the number of light years is about 8/(60*24*365), or 1.5*10^-5 light years. (Sorry about that mistake earlier.)

8 minutes and 20 seconds away for light to be precise.

The average distance between the Earth and the Sun is 149,590,787 km or 92,951,640 mi. This distance is called an Astronomical Unit (AU). The orbit of the Earth deviates a bit from a circle, so the distance between the Earth and the Sun isn't always the same. The Earth is closest to the Sun around 4 January and is furthest from the Sun around 4 July.

The difference between the distances on 4 January and 4 July is about 3 percent, which corresponds to about 5 million km or 3 million mi.

The distance between the earth and the sun is not constant. The earth's orbit around the sun is nearly circular, but not perfectly so. The earth is actually closest to the Sun in the northern hemisphere winter. I'm not certain of the time of closest approach, though.

On average, the distance between the earth and the sun is 93 million miles. This is not anywhere near a light-year. It is more like 8.3 light-minutes.

earth is 8 light minutes and 29 light seconds away from sun i.e it take a ray of light 8 minute 29 second to reach earth from sun
you can also calculate distacne by distance = time X speed
speed of ligth 300,000 km / second total time 509 sec.(8min 29 seconds)= 125700000 Kms.
