The Role and Duties of the Bridesmaid

The Chief Bridesmaid is usually the bride's sister or her closest friend and she undertakes many of the same duties as the best man for the groom, but unlike the best man does not make a speech.

Her duties begin more or less from the moment she is asked to be chief bridesmaid and consist very largely of being on hand to help the bride with whatever needs to be done.

Before the wedding

The chief bridesmaid usually has a myriad of tasks among which are the following:

Ensure the bride keeps a record of who has accepted and declined the invitations
Help the bride with the choice of her own dress and with the choice of outfits for the other attendants
Organise the hen night
Check and double-check that the last-minute details ( florists, photographer and videographer, transport etc.) are under control. The last minute is when the bride will be at her more stressed and when the bridesmaid is most needed.

On the wedding day

Arrive at the bride's home early and go with her to the hairdresser
Help her dress for the wedding
Ensure the transport is on its way and on time
Check and double check that the bride has packed everything for the honeymoon and that the luggage is organised
Arrange her dress , train, veil and head flowers before the bride enters the church
Ensure the flowergirls or younger bridesmaids are prepared and know what they are doing
Stand behind and to the side of the bride at the top of the aisle, Take her bouquet and when she is standing beside the groom at the alter, lift her veil.
Work together with the best man at the reception to break ice and introduce people to each other.
Ensure her dress is secure and put away carefully if the bride is changing at the reception venue.

After the wedding

Collect the remaining pieces of wedding cake from the reception venue and keep it well wrapped and in a cool dry place until the bride returns from honeymoon.

Return any hired dresses or clothing

The bridesmaids are there to support the bride. They should be there for her during the planning and run up to the wedding (including the hen do!) and will help her to stay stress free on the day. Be patient with your friend and really supportive, I'm getting married in 2 1/2 months and am beginning to get a little overwhelmed by it all now! Be understanding when she turns into Bridezilla, I think I'm on the verge of that one now!

Most importantly enjoy it! I hope your friend has a lovely wedding day and a successful, happy marriage.

Most important. Make the bride feel relaxed and ensure she will have a stressless day (and time towards that day). Not by action but by being there. Actions should be left to the master of ceremony.

Oh, very important!!!!
Check with 'the bride to be' you have the same idea about these 'tasks'. Do not assume she has read the same list. No sense in doubledoing things only to find out at the wedding itself. Or worse, having 'forgotten' something that somebody was assuming you should do.

The Bridesmaid's role is to support the bride throughout the planning of the wedding and, of course, be there for her on the day itself.

Unless your the maid or matron of honor... your role is mainly to "look pretty" and suport the bride... (by standing with her)

You will likely sit at the HEAD or BRIDAL table... and you will line up for pictures.. and preceed the Bride to be on the way up the aisle, and follow the Bride out.

Don't worry... most brides have a rehersal dinner to go over everything.

Your role is Simple Just Support her as much as you can do the little things like put on bachelor Party and a Wedding shower for her! and do anything that day to keep her Calm
Just be there for her!

Just to be there and support her.

There's not much to the role, she just asked you because you are a special friend to her.

organise hens night, have tissues ready, wear a hideous dress but smile and say you love it and generally give girly support and love to the bride.

Your job is to get smashed and then get it on with either the best man or groom :O)
